REALISE Training Modules

REALISE Training Modules have been developed to offer students and scholars greater access to a wide range of learning opportunities that complement their formal academic and research training. Participation in the module program is value-added and customizable according to individual interests and goals. Modules cover competencies necessary to ensure trainee success both within their academic program and in their chosen career. 

Neuroscience Knowledge

Growing subject expertise

Specific information about the normal and diseased/damaged brain and cutting-edge biology that will prove critical to future advancement.

Teaching Skills

Promoting understanding in the classroom and beyond

Teaching trainees how to educate, inspire and motivate through hands-on workshops and opportunities to teach or mentor students and community members.

Knowledge Translation

Improving science and research communication

Facilitating understanding and effecting change by improving trainees' ability to communicate knowledge to a wide variety of audiences.

Technical Skills

Increasing technological expertise

Improving knowledge about state-of-the-art neuroscience and genomic technologies to address fundamental questions about the brain.

Professional Skills

Building skills for personal and professional development

Opportunities to develop transferable skills in a wide range of areas, including (but not limited to): leadership, professionalism, business analysis and financial management.

Career Opportunities

Facilitating career encounters and community engagement

Exploring different professions and developing relationships that will direct trainees' future careers within and beyond academia.

Are you looking for ways to gain teaching experience? Consider leading a REALISE module!

Opportunities for trainees to teach can be difficult to come by. If you are interested in developing and leading a module - perhaps in a skill, technique or knowledge area where you have a particular interest or talent - please contact us at realise@ucalgary.ca. We may be able to help you with the costs of supplies, as well as with support and feedback before and after you deliver your module.
  

Interested in an external workshop or course?

We are pleased to support training opportunities for active REALISE program members attending approved workshops and courses external to the REALISE program. In recognition of the tremendous benefits that these programs can provide to our trainees, REALISE will provide a financial contribution towards the associated tuition costs. REALISE YOUR POTENTIAL

The REALISE program accepts formal registration from any student or postdoctoral scholar who is either supervised by a full member of the HBI or is enrolled in the University of Calgary's BSc Neuroscience degree program. Interested participants from other institutes and departments are also encouraged to register for individual modules and will be accommodated as space and resources permit.

Smriti Agrawal, PhD, was a postdoctoral scholar in the HBI's MS research program who went on to join the medicals affairs team in the Department of Ophthalmology for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada.
