Research at the HBI

Discovery-based research into brain and mental health is the foundation of the HBI. With one in three Canadians affected by a serious brain or mental health condition during their lifetime, this research has never been more critical.

The HBI aims to achieve internationally recognized key discoveries and transformative clinical research in the neurosciences and mental health.

This goal will be reached with the introduction of a “NeuroDiscovery Framework” (illustrated below), which aligns research within three themes of Brain & Behaviour, Neural Injury & Repair and Healthy Brain Aging. Each theme is composed of a number of “Brain and Mental Health Teams” organized in a translational continuum, which includes basic, clinical, population and public health researchers. The teams build on a springboard environment of NeuroTechnologies and support programs that will allow them to pursue their research goals.

Our researchers are experts in their fields, which range from multiple sclerosis, to stroke, to depression. Their work also deepens our understanding of the healthy brain, and how to keep it that way. By integrating the research of foundational scientists, clinicians who work with patients, technical experts and population health researchers, the HBI is going beyond scientific discoveries to improving lives.

Brain and Mental Health research strategy

Led by the HBI, the University of Calgary's Brain and Mental Health research strategy provides a unifying direction for brain and mental health research campus wide. This exciting strategy positions University of Calgary researchers to unlock new discoveries and treatments for brain health in our community by working in interdisciplinary teams.
