Research
Areas of Research
Asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, SIDS, febrile seizures, hypertension, hypotension, POTS, spinal cord injury:
We investigate how the nervous system controls the cardiorespiratory system, one of the nervous systems most important roles. Our aim is to generate new knowledge about the neuronal circuits and sensors involved, and lever this knowledge to find new ways to tackle prevalent and serious medical conditions such as Asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, SIDS, febrile seizures, abnormal blood pressure, POTS and spinal cord injury.
The huge social and economic consequences of cardiorespiratory disorders motivate our neuroscience investigations which include comparative and translational research ranging from lung fish and frogs to humans.
Our activities include research at high altitude were the cardiorespiratory system is particularly challenged, developing novel experimental preparations and medical technologies for monitoring physiological function (e.g., functional optical coherence tomography, fOCT) and drug discovery.
