Areas of Research
Since 2005, the main goal of my research program at the University of Calgary is to understand the basic mechanisms governing neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. To investigate these diseases, we use a multi-disciplinary approach that comprises cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology techniques, genetically engineered mouse models and human samples. We have been focusing on the neuronal cytoskeleton (the internal scaffolding that provides structure for the cell, as well as transports materials and sends signals to other parts of the cell) and its associated signaling proteins. Recently, we have developed expertise in the mechanisms that impact brain-body interactions with a particular focus on the gut microbiome-brain axis. In all our studies, we incorporate the biological sex factor.
