Biography

Dr. Gina Dimitropoulos is a Professor at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary, and is cross appointed with the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. Dr. Dimitropoulos is a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, and the O'Brien Institute for Public Health. She currently holds the University of Calgary Research Excellence Chair in transdisciplinary research and system level interventions for equitable and accessible youth mental health services.  She was recently inducted into the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists at the Royal Society of Canada. Additionally, she is a Clinical Fellow and Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and a Certified Family Therapist and Supervisor with the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders. Dr. Dimitropoulos has over 25 years of clinical experience in both tertiary care and community-based settings delivering family-based treatments, group therapy and individual counselling for adolescents and adults with mental health issues.

Dr. Dimitropoulos is an award-winning clinician, researcher, educator and mentor who has made significant contributions and ground-breaking advancements to the clinical and research mental health field. Throughout her academic career, he has published 160+ lifetime peer reviewed articles in peer reviewed journals and amassed over 10  million in funding as a PI or Co-PI including grants from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Health System (PRIHS), Alberta Children’s Hospital, Anonymous Donor and The Government of Alberta. She is actively engaged in working with communities, as evidenced by her numerous leadership positions as Lead Research Scientist within partner agencies and national initiatives such as Kickstand Integrated Youth Services, Hull Services, and the Child and Youth Advocacy Research and Knowledge Centre. She has sustained a track record of being recognized for her achievements and has received several prestigious awards including: Killam Graduate Supervision and Mentorship Award, University of Calgary (2024); Child Abuse Prevention Inspiration Award, the Alberta Ministry of Community and Social Services, Government of Alberta (2022); and, Peak Scholar COVID-19 Innovation Excellence Award, University of Calgary (2020).  

Dr. Dimitropoulos is a global leader in youth mental health research, partnering with transdisciplinary researchers (psychology, nursing, medicine, engineering, and public policy) both within and beyond University of the Calgary, including extensive national and international collaborations. She specializes in research developing and testing innovative interventions and improving system level responses to youth mental health, complex health conditions and child abuse. She is currently conducting research in youth mental health, youth and family peer support, patient navigation, and transitions in care.  

Dr. Dimitropoulos is also actively engaged in multiple levels of student and early career researcher training and provides mentorship and supervision to students and trainees pursuing interdisciplinary research. She frequently involves her trainees as co-investigators and collaborators to build their capacity to support the work of colleagues, as well as train the next generation of researchers. Gina’s trainees have been successful in obtaining prestigious scholarships and awards from Alberta Innovates, CIHR, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Alberta’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research, the Mathison Centre Trainee Organization, University of Calgary Eyes High Strategy, and the Provosts Doctoral Scholarship.
