Keith Sharkey Graduate Travel Award

The fund was created through generous donations from multiple donors with the intention of creating an endowed tribute fund to honor Dr. Keith Sharkey’s contribution to the leadership of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. 

Purpose of Award: support graduate trainees of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute to travel to national conferences to present their research. 

Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must be presenting their HBI-based research at a Canadian (location in Canada) conference or scientific meeting in the area of neuroscience and mental health.
  • Open to University of Calgary graduate students in good standing in a full-time graduate program (PhD/MSc).
  • Trainees’ supervisors must be full members of the HBI.
  • Trainees are only eligible to receive this award once.
  • The award will be disbursed after proof of travel (original conference badge or boarding pass) is provided.
  • Not eligible to students who have received an HBI Conference Travel Award in the same academic year.

Value: Up to $1,000. This program is subject to availability of funds.

Use of Funds: Funds are provided to defray the cost of travel to conferences.

The following criteria will be considered during the selection process:

  • Research must be in the area of Neuroscience and/or mental health
  • Must be the first author on the abstract and must be presenting the work at the conference
  • Quality of candidate: academic excellence, research experience, awards
  • Significance and quality of the proposed conference
