HBI Conference Travel Dependent Care Bursary

Funding under this program is intended to benefit Hotchkiss Brain Institute postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to travel to national and international conferences by helping to alleviate the financial burdens of dependent care while attending scientific meetings for oral or poster presentations

Field of Study: Neuroscience and Mental Health

Eligibility: 

  • A postdoctoral fellow or full-time student in a graduate program under the supervision of a full member of the HBI.

  • Applicant must be presenting original work as first author in a poster or oral presentation abstract.

Value: Up to $750. This program is subject to the availability of funds.

Number: Variable; subject to availability of funds.

Use of Funds:  

One subsidy of up to $750 will be awarded per applicant per fiscal year, subject to the availability of funds. Applications will be considered as first come, first serve. First time applicants will have priority.

The subsidy will be approved upon the submission of receipts for costs-associated with childcare for either:

a) Third party childcare services for the duration of the conference

b) Travel costs for designated caregiver

Awardees will be asked to recognize the HBI for support during presentations.

The subsidy will be disbursed after proof of travel (original conference badge or boarding pass) is provided.

Please note: Third party childcare or dependent care receipts must:

  1. Contain the caregiver’s name, address and phone number
  2. The amount paid

Apply:

A letter addressed to the Education Director (hbi.education@ucalgary.ca) outlining the name of the conference, the meeting location and a 150-300 word statement on the benefit of the conference attendance to their training, and a short paragraph detailing the need and plans for childcare arrangements.

An estimated quote on dependent care expenses during the conference.

Claim will be made for childcare expenses and/or travel costs for caregiver and/or $50 per diem for caregiver. Please note that if claiming travel costs for a caregiver, then an alternate 3rd party childcare service cannot be claimed.
