Harley N. Hotchkiss Graduate Scholarship in Neuroscience

This award reflects the commitment of the Hotchkiss Family Foundation to graduate education in neuroscience. A goal of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute is to train the next generation of research leaders in brain and mental health. This award will allow the HBI to recruit outstanding PhD graduate students to innovative, translational research training programs through the offer of highly competitive studentships.

Eligibility: 
Acceptance into a full-time PhD program under the supervision of a full member of the HBI. For trainees under co-supervision, the primary supervisor must be a full member of the HBI. Application must be made prior to, or within nine months of commencement of the program. 

Value:
$20,000/year with a research allowance of up to $2000

With an additional $10,000/year of matching funding provided by the supervisor.

Terms:
The purpose of this award is to recruit PhD students in good standing who will be highly competitive for external awards on the basis of their academic performance and research program. Thus, students holding this award are expected to apply for external awards or grants for which they are eligible, including those from provincial or national agencies.

While the award guarantees total funding of $30,000, the HBI component of the award will be pro-rated by the amount obtained from other sources (i.e. Dean's Entrance Scholarship, external scholarships, supervisor contribution).

This scholarship will be matched each year by $10,000 from the recipient's supervisor.  Applicants must provide a letter from their supervisor confirming their support for the duration of the award to maintain the guaranteed $30,000 in total funding per year. 

Renewal is contingent upon internal review of, and application for external scholarships, annual review of progress (including participation in HBI academic activities) and signed by the supervisor acknowledging satisfactory progress under the terms of the award.
