HBI Medium Equipment Fund

The HBI wants to support the ongoing research of its members. As such, HBI will be making funds available to help replace, repair or obtain new equipment. Priority will be given to individuals who have not recently received funding from this program or from other HBI allocated equipment-related funding. Emergency repairs will be considered on an ad hoc basis. As well, preference will be given to equipment requests that benefit multiple HBI labs.

Eligibility: The award is only available to labs of full HBI members. The funding request must be only for equipment-related purchases or repair services. Note that this cannot be used in conjunction with the HBI Small Equipment Replace/Repair fund. 

Value of Award: The HBI will contribute 80% of the cost, up to an amount of $40,000. Any remaining costs will be the responsibility of the applicant.

Requests for funds should be emailed to the HBI Infrastructure Director (scott.ryan@ucalgary.ca) and must include the following:

  • Primary Applicant and Co-Applicants
  • HBI service contribution of the primary applicant and co-applicants in the last 5 years
  • HBI Funds received by the primary applicant and co-applicants in the last 5 years
  • Description of the equipment the funds will support and its use or function:
  • Total projected costs of equipment
  • The amount being requested of HBI and source of matching funds secured
    • The HBI will only cover > 80% under extenuating circumstances (not exceeding $40,000)
  • Whether the equipment is/will be in a core facility
  • List of HBI members expected to use the equipment and the percent time
  • The importance of the equipment for publications and grant applications
  • Description of any other funding applied for and/or secured towards the equipment

This program is subject to availability of funds.
