Our Mission
The Mental Health Initiative for Stress and Trauma (MIST) was created at the University of Calgary’s renowned Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) to explore the impact that emotional stress and physical trauma have on the brain, and the relationship between these effects and post-concussion syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide.
MIST is advancing neuroscience research to save lives by discovering novel approaches and treatments to improve outcomes for individuals living at the intersection of brain trauma and mental health challenges. The MIST Research Chair and team are dedicated to translating science into action through public outreach and education efforts to broaden public knowledge, destigmatize mental health challenges, and improve our own individual — and collective — mental wellbeing.

Mental health issues and suicide can happen anywhere, to anyone — we are all part of this community.
Mental health issues do not discriminate —they can affect anyone and everyone regardless of who they are or where they live. We are all faces of MIST; we are all part of the same community.
