Research Activities

I have clinical, research, and educational interests in how walking aids, braces, and wheelchairs affect upper limb biomechanics as many patients with neurological impairments must weight-bear more through their arms. I developed the bracing and wheelchair seating curriculum for the physiatry residents in Calgary and I have supervised research students from Community Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, Engineering, Kinesiology, Medicine, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. I started the Hypermobility Syndromes Rehabilitation Clinic and the Bracing and Mobility Clinics in Calgary. In terms of research, I have developed collaborations to study how crutches affect upper limb kinematics and surface electromyographic activity; how ligamentous laxity conditions affect proprioception and tendon stiffness; and how Canadian professional healthcare programs teach students about walking aids. I look forward to harnessing machine learning capabilities to assess and treat abnormal movement patterns.
